Did you see my post on Instagram on Monday? I was showing off my morning smoothie, and not for the first time, either.
Since November, John and I have been on a healthy living quest. Granted, we ate a diet full of vegetables and lean meats, most of which is raised on my family's farm or in our own backyard. Regardless, we decided to amp up our diets and incorporate some exercise into our daily habits.
One such daily habit is a sugar free morning smoothie that is packed with protein. Actually, this smoothie recipe could be considered low-glycemic, which is great for everyone.
Let's be real, it's rare for a simple fruit smoothie to keep me full until lunch time. Which is why we occasionally toss in a small scoop of our favorite vegan protein powder, which John also uses as post-workout fuel.
Here's another true story. I almost always run out of energy near lunch, so I add a couple ounces of Ningxia Red (a wolf berry puree with essential oils) to my morning smoothie for an energetic antioxidant boost.
Anyway, this smoothie rocks my world. I have one every weekday morning, and have enjoyed it since November.
- 1 small apple
- 1 handful of kale (can be frozen or fresh)
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup of unsweetened, plain yogurt (we make ours homemade using this culture and this milk)
- 1 small scoop of protein powder (optional)
- 2 ounces of Ningxia Red (optional)
- 1 spoonful of ground flax seed
- 1 small spoonful of baobab powder
- dash of cinnamon
Directions: Pop this all in your blender, or a blender cup if you have a single-serve blender, and let 'er rip!
What do you put in your morning smoothies?
