Sneaky Ways We Freshen Our Basement with Oils.

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor. That's why you shouldn't take any of my words on essential oils as medical advice. I'm simply sharing my experiences with essential oils and how we use them for our own health and in our home. Please use good judgement and seek medical advice from a professional for any ailment.

Our historic home has tons of character, which we love.

But, it also has a scary basement, which I don’t love. I’ve written about that HERE and HERE.

Our basement is not livable space. We store paint there, and in the late winter I start my seeds down there under some lamps I steal from John’s garage. That’s all our basement ‘does’ for us.

The basement does, however, house a dehumidifier (which gets a workout in our humid Iowa summers!), a laundry sink (although our laundry is on our main floor), and our furnace. This space is musty and damp, especially in the spring and summer. Aside from using our dehumidifier and opening a couple small windows, we use some essential oils to freshen that space.

First, when was the last time you changed you furnace filter? If you can’t remember, it’s probably time to change it.
To keep your furnace running smoothly and efficiently, experts recommend replacing the filter every 4-6 weeks in the winter when running the heat, and every 4 weeks in the summer when running the AC.
When we replace our filter, I also drop 10 drops of Thieves essential oil and 10 drops of Purification essential oil on the filter before replacing.

Every time the fan kicks on, the air that passes through meets the filter that I’ve infused with essential oils. Not only does it give our home a pleasant scent (Thieves smells like cinnamon to me), but the ingredients that make up this blend are also really straightforward:

After particularly damp weather, we also move a diffuser to the basement and diffuse Thieves (for mold and heavy air purification) or Purification (for general air sanitation) for several hours.

And, just as a little teaser for y'all, we use essential oils to clean and freshen our whole home. Here are some recommendations that we actually do ourselves:
  • Use oils as cleaning products. Even a drop of lemon on a damp dish rag as you wipe down all of your kitchen surfaces will leave a pleasant scent.
  • Put a few drops of Purification or a citrus-y blend on your vacuum filter.
  • Place a few drops of your favorite smelling oil on a cotton ball, and wedge in your vents. Every time your fan kicks on, instant freshness.

What other things should we do to freshen our musty basement?

  1. So I use Thieves and Purification frequently for EVERYTHING! I have not used it on my filter. Does it really last the 4 weeks?

    1. I would say it lasts a solid 2 weeks, for sure. We don't run our AC a whole lot, so it might last longer for us. The scent for sure lasts 2 weeks.

  2. These are really unique ways to use essential oils to freshen up our life! We normally use essential oils in our air filters. Every time we change our filters, we add a few drops of our favorite essential oils before replacing them. Essential oils leave a pleasant scent throughout the house.
