Essential Oils Series: What Are They, and How Do I Use Them?

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor. In fact, I have no medical experience whatsoever. That's why you shouldn't take any of my words on essential oils as medical advice. I'm simply sharing my experiences with essential oils and how we use them for our own health and in our home. Please use good judgement and seek medical advice from a professional for any ailment.

I have a special series to present to you, friends. And it's all about essential oils.

You've heard about oils before, no doubt. From a family member, the lady at MOPS, or your kinda crunchy friend who you stalk on Facebook. You know you do it. It's OK.

You probably already know that people of all walks of life and from all different backgrounds are using oils to feel better physically, emotionally and spiritually.  This, my friends, is what essential oils are all about. Over the next week or so, I am going to explain how we use oils, why we use them, and the successes we've had as a direct result.

Clearly, I am not a doctor, nor a health professional of any sort. I am simply going to share our experiences, which will probably compliment the experiences you've heard from others.

Today, we're just going to get a brief overview.

Essential oils are:

  • Concentrated, natural, aromatic liquids that are extracted from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds.
  • Pure, and have many potential benefits for wellbeing.

You can use essential oils for:

Home - in homemade cleaning supplies, freshening the air, and more.
Wellness - to support a healthy immune system.
Beauty - in shampoos, cleaners, anti-aging solutions, and other cosmetics.
Balance - for spiritual, mental, and emotional support.

You can use essential oils in three basic ways:

Like inhaling right from the bottle, diffusing in a room, or adding to a hot bowl of water and breathing the steam. This is our favorite way to use our oils. We have three diffusers around our home, and are diffusing our own blends daily. I will be sharing some of our favorites to diffuse in this series!

Topical Application

By rubbing 1-3 drops of oil on the desired area, or adding a few drops to your favorite massage oil. Some oils should be added to a carrier oil for sensitive skin or children, like 'warm' oils that feel warm when applied. This is our second-favorite way to use oils and, you guessed it, I am going to share the topical applications we use in this series.

Some, but not all, oils can be ingested by adding a drop or two to your cooking, in a glass of water or natural juice, or even a few drops in a gel capsule and swallowed with water. If you're feeling really badass, you can put a drop on or under your tongue. On occasion, I ingest oils. I'll only share a few of these methods with you in this series.

Lastly, here's a short video (produced by Young Living) that highlights what essential oils are and a bit about the company. Give it a look, if you're interested:
