Freshen Your Husband's Nasty Laundry {with Purex Crystals}

Today's post comes at me from an odd angle, and no doubt you're probably wondering why I'm writing about laundry, let alone Purex Crystals. I don't want you to think I am a poser, but I know you realize we're on an all-natural, eco-friendly journey and might find it odd that I am writing a Purex sponsored post.

I want to share with you how I came upon Purex Crystals, and give you my honest opinion on this "conventional" laundry product. Hopefully you can appreciate the 'happy medium' I'm trying to strike here :)

Several weeks ago - so long, in fact, that I don't recall the month - I applied to test out some all-natural Purex cleaning and laundry supplies. I did so because I figured not all of my readers have the means, the care, or desire to make their own laundry soap or cleaning supplies. I thought recommending a few all-natural Purex products would be helpful to those of you.

Fast forward to the present, and you'll find me tearing open a box from Purex, but dismayed to see it's not the all-natural products I hoped for. Far from it, in fact. And, not something I would ordinarily buy for myself. I opened a box of Purex Crystals Limited Edition Fabulously Fresh, an in-wash fragrance booster.

Non-toxic cleaners are my top priority, so you might imagine the conundrum I found myself in. After him-hawing over reviewing this product or donating it to someone, I actually decided to take this random product for a "test-drive" of sorts, and share my feelings with you.

Not all of you sweet, dear readers care to make your own laundry soap, and choose to purchase fabric softener, dryer sheets, and in-wash fragrance boosters. For those of you that are looking for a unique laundry product that leaves clothes smelling fresh for a considerable length of time, but aren't wholly concerned with laundry additives, this post is for you! Some of you are very opposed to such products, in which case, I will not be offended if you tune out for the remainder of this post.

Here's how I used Purex Crystals Limited Edition Fabulously Fresh:

1. During an afternoon of spring cleaning, I gathered up all of our winter jackets and cold weather accessories to put away for the season. Every year I wash them and store in totes in our spare bedroom. When the following fall hits, our coats and outwear always smell swanky and stale.

This year I used Purex Crystals on our winter garb, and they came out smelling super fresh. I have confidence that in another 7 months, these items won't have such a stale odor.

2. I used my unscented, homemade laundry soap on almost everything. There are something - namely John's work jeans - that never seem to lose their greasy residue. Once in a while I'll use a store-bought detergent on his jeans. Sometimes that greasy, oily smell is still on his shirts and jeans (and don't get me started on his socks!).

I decided to wash a load of John's work clothes with a small capful of Purex Crystals Limited Edition Fabulously Fresh.

Did they come out smelling fresh as a spring morning? Mostly. But I could tell it was kind of a cover-up scent.

3. Lastly, I washed our quilts and throw blankets with my homemade laundry soap and Purex Crystals. They smelled very floral and were clean, thanks to my homemade soap. I actually enjoyed snuggling up in my super soft blanket on the couch and smelling the fresh scent.

Would I purchase this product for myself, even after trying it out and being satisfied with the results? I don't think so. However, this is a product that might appeal to you. If you and your family do not have sensitive skin, want to try a new laundry product, and don't mind using 'conventional' laundry products (like the the majority of Americans), then I'd recommend Purex Crystals. In fact, I have three coupons for a FREE full-sized bottle of Purex Crystals Limited Edition Fabulously Fresh for you.

If you'd like a chance to win, simply leave a comment - ANY COMMENT - and I'll randomly select 3 winners using Random.org in one week. You can even tell me why you want to try Purex Crystals Limited Edition Fabulously Fresh! (Remember, I'll choose THREE winners!)

Disclosure: The Purex Brand provided me with a sample of Purex Crystals Limited Edition Fabulously Fresh in exchange for a product review. However, all opinions expressed here are my own! I promise!

  5. My Amish neighbor lady shared some of her homemade detergent with me. She makes it using rendered beef tallow and lye and I wonder if Purex Crystals will give it a pleasant smell.

  6. I would love to try them in the same ways you have...I make my own soap too, but am hoping to use it near the coats and other items stored until the winter months.

    Thanks for all of your tips...I enjoy reading the blog! :)
