My Last 'Last Day of School'.

And so begins my summer break.

Can I even call it a summer break?

I guess it is still a summer break, I won't be substitute teaching over the summer. But I won't be returning to the classroom full-time in the fall, either.

I am sad. I knew I would be sad on this day. It's the students, totally. And it doesn't help that they threw me a surprise going-away party and created a scrapbook for me. The scrapbook was amazing; each student designed a page and included their school picture and wrote a 'love note'. They have my heart, especially the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors; the ones who I feel like I am 'leaving' behind.

That sounds silly, doesn't it? That I'm 'leaving' them behind?

It's true, though. Teachers often see their students as their own. I'm not a mother, but sometimes I feel like a mom with these kids. (Fortunately or unfortunately, however you want to look at it) I was responsible for shaping them into adults that can make good decisions and be a functioning member of a community. I saw them every. single. day (except for summers), sometimes more than their own parents. So yes, they're mine, and I'm leaving them.

I know this feeling will fade and I will be very happy with my choice to travel with John and do some subbing when I'm in town, but it's still hard. The only thing that is keeping me from a total emotional breakdown is thinking of my big plans this summer, and I can't wait to tell you all about them. I agree with my mom when she said that it will hit me hard again in the fall when I would normally be returning to school. I need to get some projects lined up to keep my mind occupied!

Speaking of that: Have you 'liked' The Sustainable Couple on Facebook yet? You already know we only post three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). This is going to be the place to party this summer when we are away on our travels.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a classroom to clean out.

*tear*

Over and out.
