Compostin' like a boss.

I'm ashamed.

I can't believe I forgot to tell you that I bought a compost bin in May. It really does boggle my mind, because I use this sucker almost every day. Granted, since I just got it in May I don't have any compost yet, I still find myself stirring and adding (and sometimes watering, given the drought) on a regular basis.

This compost bin is part of my routine now, and I'm super disappointed that I didn't get you all in on the action sooner. I assume that collective groan that I just heard means that you are really excited to see this sucker, right?

Anyway, here she is:

Ain't she purdy?

Wanna look inside?

Are you sure?

I bought this beaut from Craigslist for $20. I wanted John to build be one, but after looking into that option we realized buying used would be more cost effective and ultimately greener, in our case. Yeah, it's plastic, but it's not PVC and has no BPA so I don't think there's any worry that something could be leeching into our compost.

As of today, I haven't actually been able to use anything from the bin, since it takes a while to make some good compost. Really, the hardest part is remembering to put things in it! I often forget to take my organic kitchen scraps outside, I just toss them in the trash can. And yard waste usually gets tossed in the "Yardy" container that is picked up once a week by the city. (Our city picks up this stuff and composts as well, so I guess it's not that bad.) What I'm saying is: It's really hard to break routines.

My goal is to be able to use it by the end of October or November so I can put a layer of compost down in my raised beds before the hard winter hits. A sister can dream, can't she?
