What do you do with your free time?

Lately I've discovered that nothing readjusts my attitude or brings me back to the essence of who I am like doing something that makes me feel good. Really good. Deep inside my heart.

Yeah, I guess when my co-workers recognize something I did makes me feel good. Carpet with vacuum marks is pretty cool, too. And, of course, snugglin' with Manny makes me feel good.

But that good feeling that I'm talking about comes from doing something for others. Something that you will not benefit from. Something that wouldn't get done under other circumstances.

In order to chase that feeling (and readjust my attitude) I began volunteering at the Cedar Valley Humane Society twice a week.

It's not glamorous. I don't rescue animals from terrible homes while Sarah McLauclan's "In The Arms of the Angels" plays in the background.

Once during the week I walk 3 to 4 dogs after work, and on Sunday mornings I spend a few hours cleaning out cat kennels. I get dirty. I sweat. I leave smelling like cats, dogs, and their corresponding feces.

But I love it. Love, love, love it.

The people I see while volunteering are phenomenal, caring individuals. They love animals and they love their community, all while realizing the important role each serves for the other. I am pretty proud to be part of this subculture in our community.

And it makes me feel good.

What do you do with your free time? What do you do that gives you purpose?
