We're Licensed Foster & Adoptive Parents!

We received notification from our Iowa Kids Net worker that our Foster/Adoptive parent materials were accepted, making us officially licensed foster parents in the state of Iowa! WOOOOO HOOOOOO!

And then, not even 12 hours later J and I BOTH received a phone call at work, asking if we could take a sibling group - a 2 and 4 year old, or a 1 and 3 year old. Since our official day of licensure, a worker from Iowa Kids Net has called us every day with a potential placement. Every. single. day. Sometimes twice. We knew there was a remarkable need for foster parents in our county, but we had NO IDEA what this actually meant...until now. My heart melts for these children every time I see Iowa Kids Net on my caller ID.

We've followed up on two of those calls - the first sibling group (ages 1 and 3) and a 2 year old boy who was an emergency placement. In fact, we even had the chance to meet that first sibling group at a local park - we were strongly considering welcoming a baby girl and a young boy into our home. But, after learning a little bit about the birth family and realizing we'd be parenting a teen mom as well, we knew we weren't ready for this placement. The 2 year old boy found a family - and we were so relieved, because his situation was heartbreaking.

I admit, I was worried that when J and I started this process (nearly 8 months ago!) we wouldn't get any calls for placements, and we'd never get the chance to adopt from foster care. I thought our capabilities as parents were too narrow, and a child we could effectively parent wasn't out there. I thought no one would think we could be good parents because we don't have children of our own. My initial fear has dissipated, and I'm very confident that J and I will soon accept a placement and will eventually adopt.

I still wonder what some of our friends will think when they meet our foster/adoptive child(ren) for the first time. Yeah, yeah - I know you're thinking, "You shouldn't care what people think, Kelli!" But, you'd be off your rocker if you think other peoples' opinions don't matter.

They do. And they always will.

But that's a discussion for another day.
